The simple design of classic, shaker-style wooden pegboard molding makes it an ideal addition to a mudroom, bathroom, closet or anywhere you hang things. It might be at the back door for a dog’s leash or a front entry for a hat; it’s a solution as well as an enhancement to a room. You can leave it natural, stain it or paint it, and it’s easy to install. The clean, simple lines of shaker design work in any style home from country to contemporary.

If you’re itching to pick up a tool and try your hand at a DIY project, installing pegboard molding is a good first-timer job. The molding is inexpensive, and the carpentry tools are basic: a carpenter’s level, back saw and drill. If the ends are rough, smooth the surface with sandpaper. You’ll need the molding, wood screws to fasten it to the wall, and paint or stain for finishing. But do the finishing first before installing it. That way you won’t have to mask around it to prevent getting paint or stain on the wall. Locate the pegboard for convenience. For a kid’s room keep it low; for towels in a bathroom make it easy to reach.

You can buy a 10-foot piece of 3 1/2 inch pine pegboard for $20 or pay a handyman $60, including labor and material, to do the job. If you do the job, you’ll save 67% and enjoy the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
