Everything is going digital, including a standard door peephole viewer. It’s an upgrade to the standard and often distorted one-eye peephole viewer found in many old doors. The digital unit uses an LCD panel to display a large and clear image of the person on the other side of your door. To operate, press the power button on the viewer and an undistorted image appears on the viewer screen on the inside of the door. A zoom feature lets you enlarge the center of the field of view to see facial details.

To install a digital peephole viewer in a door, a handyman will charge $223, which includes the unit and labor. If you have no qualms about cutting a hole in your door you can buy the viewer for $130, install it and pocket a 42% saving.

The digital viewer device is designed with a do-it-yourselfer in mind because it comes with the only tool needed: a tightening tool to remove an old peephole and install the new one. There are only four parts, a peephole lens and barrel, a base flange and the viewer. You’ll see some come with the batteries required. If there is not already a peephole in the door, you need to drill a half-inch hole in the door to install the viewer.
