CALGARY, Canada—The Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium came alive with vibrant song and dance for the first of three Shen Yun Performing Arts shows in Calgary on March 27.
Dan Wojtowicz, who does marketing for Shaw Communications, said the design, the costumes, and the colour were some of the aspects of the show that impressed him.
“I love it—the colours, the costumes. I really liked the “Our Story” piece, very touching. I’d like to see more of that in future shows.”
Mr. Wojtowicz attended the show with his mother, Charlotte, and his friend Jared Prince.
“We are thoroughly enjoying it,” said Mrs. Wojtowicz. “The costumes are beautiful, the dancing—you can see there is so much work involved in learning the dancing.”
She said she also enjoyed the music by the Shen Yun Orchestra with its unique blend of classical Western and Chinese instruments.
“Very nice, it’s very easy to listen to. Actually it’s kind of relaxing.”
Mr. Wojtowicz liked the innovative animated backdrops that interact with the story-based dances.
“It’s neat, I was actually taken aback at first … kind of cool, different,” he said.
Mr. Prince said he particularly enjoyed the female dancers and their costumes.
“My favourite are the girls, the dresses, they flow, they sparkle. It’s very visually appealing.”
He said it was his first time seeing classical Chinese dance, the centrepiece of the show and an integral part of traditional performing arts.
“It’s something I’m enjoying so far,” he said during the intermission.
He added that the show “is not what I expected—it’s better than what I expected.”

Shen Yun will play two more shows in Calgary and then continue on to Vancouver for the last of its Canadian shows this season. Shen Yun’s two other equally large companies are currently touring in Europe and Asia. For more information, visit www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org.
