Your first 48 hours in Washington, D.C. starts as soon as you arrive at one of its three airports. And if you have no more than 48 hours of stay in the city, you shouldn’t waste time to unpack your bags. As soon as you’ve settled in your hotel room or any other chosen place of accommodation, you should hit the streets right away!
Day 1
Make the most out of your first 24 hours in Washington, D.C. by visiting the city’s top attractions. Most of which can be found at the National Mall, a 1.9 mile open garden in the city’s downtown area. Some of the city’s top monuments are in there, along with a couple of museums. Most of the museums at National Mall have free admission and are open beginning 10am until 5:30pm daily.
Among the must see monuments and museums at National Mall are the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the National Museum of Natural History. Other places to see in Washington, D.C. during your first day include the United States Capitol, the Library of Congress, and of course, the White House. Every now and then, performers also stage soul funk, jazz, and heavy metal.
End your first day at Washington, D.C. by seeking refuge at the Black Cat. The Black Cat is one of the best places in town if you want to hear indie or rock music.
Day 2
Spend your final 24 hours in Washington, D.C. by visiting other iconic attractions like the National Archives, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the C&O Canal and Towpath. Before the day comes to an end, you can drop by at the Millennium Stage of Kennedy Center. Every night at 6pm, you can catch a free concert there.
After having late dinner, you don’t have to go back to your hotel just yet. You can hang out at Raven and play some music with their jukebox or Madam’s Organ to listen to classic American music like blues, jazz, and bluegrass.
