Have you heard of the recent donut mashup? WONUTS! Waffle donut, from Chicago. And because we’re currently unable to go to Chicago to try them, we thought we should experiment making them in our kitchen.
WONUT
INGREDIENTS
Night Before:
1/4 cup warm water
1/2 TBS active-dry yeast
1/4 cup melted butter
1 cup milk
1/2 tsp salt
1 tablespoonsTBS sugar
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
The Next Day:
1 beaten egg
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Enough oil to fry
1. Combine the yeast and the water in a large mixing bowl and let stand for a few minutes. Stir to make sure the yeast dissolves into the water.
2. Melt the butter over low heat.
Combine the butter with the milk, salt, and sugar. Test with your finger to make sure the mixture has cooled to luke warm, then stir it into the dissolved yeast mixture.
3.Add the flour and stir until a thick dough is formed and there is no more visible flour.
4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit on the counter overnight. The batter will double or triple in bulk as it rises.
5. The next morning, beat the egg and add them to the batter along with the baking soda into the batter until completely combined.
6. Preheat oil.
7. Make the waffles according to your waffle maker’s instructions, cooking until the waffles are halfway done (about 3-4 mins).
8. Fry the waffle until golden brown. Decorate!
