Coming on like a kind of garage rock take on LCD Soundsystem’s more frivolous moments, Hanni El Khatib’s debut album lacks much in the way of depth, but for all of its lack of innovation it’s often utterly enjoyable fare. ‘Build.Destroy.Rebuild’ is a straightforward romp whereas ‘Garbage City’ is a twisted paean to Khatib’s dirty but beloved home town of Los Angeles. It’s not wall-to-wall riffing either with some more thoughtful bluesy numbers populating the middle of the record, but Khatib’s best work often comes when he goes for the jugular. Fearsomely energetic throughout, it won’t win any prizes for originality but it is certainly good fun.
