Good Friday is today, April 18. The holiday is a religious one as opposed to an official federal one, although a number of states have made it an official holiday.

See some quotes and sayings for the day below.

“Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection, not in books alone but in every leaf in springtime.” -- Martin Luther

“The cross was two pieces of dead wood; and a helpless, unresisting Man was nailed to it; yet it was mightier than the world, and triumphed, and will ever triumph over it.”
-- Augustus William Hare

“Christmas and Easter can be subjects for poetry, but Good Friday, like Auschwitz, cannot. The reality is so horrible, it is not surprising that people should have found it a stumbling block to faith.” -- W.H Auden

“We may say that on the first Good Friday afternoon was completed that great act by which light conquered darkness and goodness conquered sin. That is the wonder of our Savior’s crucifixion.” -- Phillips Brooks

“The dripping blood our only drink,

The bloody flesh our only food:

In spite of which we like to think

That we are sound, substantial flesh and blood -

Again, in spite of that, we call this Friday good.” - T.S. Eliot

“It’s Good Friday. Good because 2000 years ago the events of today prove that we matter to God.” -- Unknown

“Mercy, peace, and love. May the grace and Lord surround and be with you on Good Friday.” -- Unknown
