PASADENA, Calif.—Kay Ceniceros and her husband, Blair, are both tried-and-true civic leaders and benefactors of community development for Riverside County, the fourth largest county in California.

They were among the audience members enjoying an afternoon experience of Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company on April 30 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Mr. Ceniceros, who was awarded for his leadership after serving as president of the Mountain Communities Fire Safety Council in Idyllwild, Calif., said after the performance, said, “It’s a beautiful show; second time we’ve seen it.” They first watched Shen Yun last year at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.

This time, however, they brought more of the family. “We thought we’d take our whole family. So I brought my daughter and her family, and my wife and I both wanted to see it, so here we are,” he said.

Mrs. Ceniceros is a former chairwoman and member of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. She also is a past president of the Southern California Association of Governments and the Riverside County Transportation Commission.

She thoroughly enjoyed watching Shen Yun.

“It couldn’t be any more beautiful than the world would allow,” she said.

She enjoyed how Shen Yun portrays different periods in Chinese history. Pieces concerning the glorious Tang Dynasty and the short-lived but influential Qin Dynasty, from which the Terracotta Warriors were born, were included in this year’s performance.

Mrs. Ceniceros said, “It’s just moving,” after describing the portrayal of history she watched on stage. “You get a good sense of a deepening and deepening relationship to all the people.”

She added that Shen Yun has an incredible ability to bring music and color together to make a “very highly, clearly, completely perfect” production.

Shen Yun is a classical Chinese music and dance company that aims to restore 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture.

The show features a unique live orchestra that combines traditional Chinese and classical Western instruments.

Mr. Ceniceros said that he thought the musicians were wonderful.

“It’s a very well-trained orchestra. I don’t see how they could be any better,” he said.

Shen Yun also includes vocalists who sing in Chinese while an English translation appears on a backdrop.

“We love music, [and] opera,” he said. “We appreciate the tenor and the soprano because my sister was an opera singer and her husband was an opera singer and we’ve seen many operas.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts will perform in Escondido, San Diego, at the California Center for the Arts, May 3–5, and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County, May 6–8. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
