A War Flick With the Odd Couple

‘Sniper’

After Veteran sniper Thomas Beckett (Tom Berenger) loses his partner on a mission to eliminate a Panamanian rebel, he’s paired with inexperienced sharpshooter Richard Miller (Billy Zane). In the jungle, the mismatched duo must track down and eliminate the rebel leader while navigating a host of dangers.

With strong performances from Berenger and Zane, the film avoids clichés and remains effective. Its simplicity, jungle setting, and well-chosen music create a suspenseful atmosphere that still holds up.

A Tense Western With a Remote Setting

‘Rawhide’

Four fugitives take control of a remote stagecoach station so they can rob an upcoming gold shipment. They force employee Tom Owens (Tyrone Power) to keep up appearances. Owens and traveler Vinnie Holt (Susan Hayward) then plot their escape.

With a strong cast, director Henry Hathaway uses sound design and real night shots to enhance the single location atmosphere. The result is a great Western.
