This week, we feature a coming-of-age road drama about self discovery and a Hitchcock classic focusing on high seas survivors.

New Release

‘What We Find on the Road’

When TJ (Finn Haney) receives a key from his estranged father, he discovers that it unlocks a battered 1968 Dodge Polara convertible with a note pointing to a destination many miles away. He then sets off on a cross-country trip, encountering quirky misfits along the way.

This film showcases the stunning landscapes of rural America, including small towns and the unique characters within them. As TJ delves deeper into his quest, the story reflects the journey we all take—navigating life’s twists and turns, one mile at a time.

Drama Release Date: Sept. 20, 2024 Director: Chaysen Beacham Starring: Finn Haney, William Chris Sumpter, Paul Guilfoyle Running Time: 1 hour, 33 minutes MPAA Rating: R Where to Watch: Theaters Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

Family Pick

 ‘Secretariat’

This uplifting film focuses on Penny Chenery (Diane Lane), a housewife, who, with the help of trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich), transforms her late father’s stables and guides Secretariat to become a championship racehorse. This inspiring movie celebrates and incorporates references to faith and timeless American values.

While the film is well-acted and family-friendly, it focuses more on Penny’s journey than on the iconic racehorse himself. But for a wholesome, feel-good movie about perseverance, it’s a great choice.

An Outlandish Comedy That Works

 ‘Hiding Out’

A prominent Wall Street stockbroker (Jon Cryer) is forced into hiding after an assassination attempt. To avoid detection, he hides out with relatives, changes his look, and enrolls as a high school student under a new identity.

This is a silly yet enjoyable comedy that highlights Cryer’s strong comedic skills. The supporting cast, including Annabeth Gish as his love interest, and Keith Coogan adds additional charm. With a catchy soundtrack and 1980s flair, the far-fetched story is surprisingly effective.

Comedy | Drama | Teen Romance Release Date: Nov. 6, 1987 Director: Bob Giraldi Starring: Jon Cryer, Keith Coogan, Annabeth Gish Running Time: 1 hour, 38 minutes MPAA Rating: PG-13 Where to Watch: Amazon, Vudu, Tubi TV Rated: 3 stars out of 5

Hitchcock’s Drama on the High Seas

‘Lifeboat’

A group of survivors is stranded on a lifeboat after their ship and a German U-boat are both destroyed in combat. Their situation worsens when they rescue a German survivor from the sea.

This is a gripping drama that blends psychological tension with action. Director Hitchcock skillfully maximizes the film’s single setting, delivering a suspenseful and engaging story.
