This week, we feature an unexpectedly good animated sequel featuring lovable characters and a character-driven World War I film.

New Release

‘The Good Half’

Nick Jonas stars as Renn Wheeland, a writer who travels to his hometown for his mother’s funeral. On the plane, he meets Zoey Abbot (Alexandra Shipp), an insightful young woman who helps him address long-standing familial issues.

Although this dramedy aims to portray the peculiarities of grief, it often struggles to convey believable characters. Even the flashbacks of Renn’s mother don’t elicit much emotion. Despite its good intentions, the film’s heartfelt moments are somewhat hampered by its contrived characters.

Comedy | Drama Release Date: July 23, 2024 Director: Robert Schwartzman Starring: David Arquette, Nick Jonas, Ryan Bergara Running Time: 1 hour, 50 minutes MPAA Rating: Not Rated Where to Watch: Theaters Rated: 2 stars out of 5

Family Pick

 ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’

This spirited sequel follows Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Sheriff Tom (James Marsden), who live in a small town. While Tom and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) attend a wedding in Hawaii, Sonic must come to the rescue when a dastardly villain returns.

Sequels often struggle to match their predecessors but not so in this case. This film not only meets those lofty expectations but exceeds them. It authentically captures the essence of the beloved game franchise onto the expansive canvas of the cinema screen.

Action | Adventure | Comedy Release Date: April 8, 2022 Director: Jeff Fowler Starring: James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz Running Time: 2 hours, 2 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Where to Watch: Amazon, Vudu Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

An Excellent Australian War Drama

‘Gallipoli’

This film follows a group of young Australians who join the army during World War I. Sent to Gallipoli, they face both psychological and emotional challenges while learning to unite against the powerful Ottoman Empire of Turkey.

This anti-war film is a compelling tale of honor and sacrifice, capturing one of Australia’s most hard-fought campaigns. With excellent performances, especially by a young Mel Gibson, it’s highly rec0mmended to anyone who enjoys slower films and appreciates character-driven dramas.

Adventure | Drama | History Release Date: Aug. 28, 1981 Director: Peter Weir Starring: Mel Gibson, Mark Lee, Bill Kerr Running Time: 1 hour, 40 minutes MPAA Rating: PG Where to Watch: Amazon, Vudu, Hoopla Rated: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

A Classic Blend of Love and Laughter

‘The Matchmaker’

Dolly Levi (Shirley Booth) has spent years matchmaking for others—now she wants to find love herself and soon targets the wealthy merchant Horace Vandergelder (Paul Ford). Complications arise as Horace pursues the young Irene Molloy (Shirley MacLaine).

The film boasts an exceptional ensemble cast and refined production values. It’s a gently amusing and superbly performed gem.
