New Release
‘The Beekeeper’
Jason Statham stars as Adam Clay, a former operative of a shadowy organization known as the Beekeepers. Clay’s peaceful life is upended when his kind neighbor commits suicide after being duped by a powerful corporation’s scam. Now, he seeks revenge. This is one of those dopey, modern actioners that is so over-the-top that it verges on parody. However, action fans who don’t care about a film’s threadbare storyline should find its cartoonish fisticuffs and pew-pew shootouts entertaining enough.
Family Pick
‘Overcomer’
When a town’s major manufacturing plant shuts down causing a massive exodus of workers, high school basketball coach John Harrison (Alex Kendrick) and his family worry about their prospects. John is assigned to coach the school’s running team—but it consists of a single runner who has asthma.Although this film has some Christian parables, it has plenty of positive takeaways with universal appeal. Its inspiring narrative should touch the hearts of even the most jaded of viewers.
An Inspiring Politics-Themed Film
‘Dave’
When Washington business-owner Dave Kovic (Kevin Kline) is contacted by the White House to have him stand-in for the president, he takes the temporary gig. However, his uncanny resemblance to the president soon brings him more than he bargained for. This beloved ’90s romantic comedy has a peppy pace, charming performances by its ensemble cast, and sly comments on our capital’s corrupt politics. Just be aware that it does have some strong sexual content early on—a little too much for its PG-13 rating.
A Heartwarming 1950’s Romcom
‘The Model and the Marriage Broker’
New York matchmaker Mae Swasey (Thelma Ritter) sees a new opportunity when handsome radiographer Matt Hornbeck (Scott Brady) suddenly becomes single. She schemes to link him up with pretty model Kitty Bennett (Jeanne Crain), but things don’t go as planned.Although this classic romcom is quite charming and packed with beautiful people, Thelma Ritter steals every scene she’s in.
