‘Sidewalls’
Martin (Javier Drolas) and Mariana (Pilar López de Ayala) have a lot in common and seem like they’d be highly compatible. But, although they are neighbors in the busy city of Buenos Aires and visit the same haunts, the timing of any meeting is always off. This is one of those slowly-moving romcoms that draws you in with its sumptuous cinematography and charming characters. Although it accurately conveys the feelings of alienation that can sometimes be felt by those living in big cities, it’s also a hopeful film with a big heart.
Enjoyable and Nostalgic ‘80s Americana
‘Top Gun’
When Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and buddy Lt. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) get the opportunity to attend Top Gun, the special Navy training program that accepts only the most skilled naval pilots, they jump on it. But a mishap causes Mitchell’s life to take a turn for the worse. Will he recover?Although the drama follows the tragedy-redemption storyline trope, it’s full of over-the-top masculine drama, charming romance, and some breathtaking aerial photography.
Standing Up Against Evil in Vietnam
‘The Green Berets’
Col. Mike Kirby (John Wayne) leads a U.S. Special Forces team (that is, the Green Berets) on clandestine missions into Vietnam. However, Kirby has to contend not only with vile communist forces, but also an embedded reporter who is cynical of the Vietnam War.This rousing actioner has strong patriotic themes, but its “G” rating is misleading, since it has some very violent scenes.
