Eric (Michael Cera) only planned to visit his hometown for a short while. However, as he spends more time with his sisters Rachel (Hannah Gross) and Maggie (Sophia Lillis), nostalgia and a sense of family begin to creep in and he extends his stay—that, and his obsession with being the best poker player in the area.
This low-key indie flick is a slow-burn drama wrought with awkward tension that gradually gives way to some buoyancy. It should resonate with anyone who has ever had strained relations with their relatives.
Family Pick
‘Around the World in 80 Days’During the Victorian Era, Englishman Phileas Fogg (David Niven) makes a bet with members of his private club that he can successfully circumnavigate the entire Earth in 80 days. He sets off with his trusty valet Passepartout (Cantinflas) but soon discovers that he may have bit off more than he can chew.
This delightful yarn packs lots of humor, plenty of exotic locales to ogle, great sets and costumes, and a who’s who cast of Golden Age actors. It’s perfect viewing (for older kids on up) on a Sunday afternoon.
A Charming Romantic Comedy From the ’80s
Off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, young Allen Bauer (David Kreps) falls off a boat and is rescued by little Madison (Shayla Mackarvich), a mermaid. Years later, Allen is an adult (Tom Hanks) with a sagging love life, until beautiful Madison (Daryl Hannah), who has legs when on land, seeks him out. However, several major challenges threaten their romance.
Although this film’s plot is pretty far-fetched, its two main actors (Hanks and Hannah) have a fantastic chemistry together that elevates it from corny to charming.
A Naval Duel of Wits during WWII
‘The Enemy Below’During World War II, U.S. Navy Capt. Murrell (Robert Mitchum) commands a destroyer that discovers a German submarine helmed by Von Stolberg (Curt Jürgens) in the Atlantic. Now the two must try to outwit each other if they are to return home.
This is an edge-of-your-seat naval thriller with solid acting performances and gripping action sequences—a high-stakes duel to the death.
