NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.—For Mr. David Stahl, a lawyer, businessman, and Mayor of the Township of East Brunswick in New Jersey, the Divine Performing Arts’ Chinese New Year Spectacular offered something much needed in today’s dreary economy—hope.
Mr. Stahl attended Divine Performing Arts final show in New Brunswick’s State Theater on Sunday Jan. 25. He said the lyrics of the Spectacular’s three vocal soloists were deeply moving for him and that they carried an optimism that left him feeling refreshed.
“As a mayor, sometimes I think more of some things that involve our own community, and here in New Jersey we have difficult economic times, difficult times, families losing their jobs and as I look at those words, I know that [message] is more powerful because it’s really meant on a bigger scale.”
“It’s powerful. It’s like, in my case, going to a synagogue hearing a sermon by a Rabi, so to speak.”
“That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy the beautiful costumes and music of the drums and all the other stuff. I just love the meaning of the words.”
The guiding mission of Divine Performing Arts is to rediscover and renew humanity’s true, rightful cultural heritage. The company thus creates and performs works that center upon the true, divinely bestowed culture of humankind, and seeks to provide an experience of consummate beauty and goodness.
“Very exciting show … from the beginning to the end. Very informative, very beautiful, colorful. I loved the music and I loved the meaning of the music. The lyrics are very powerful, meaningful to me.”
When asked if it was his first time to see the show, Mayor Stahl said, “The first, absolutely, but I guarantee not the last.”
Mr. Stahl said he had been to some Chinese New Year celebrations at local schools the day before and the show tonight was the “culmination of a very good weekend,” for him and his family as they celebrated the holiday.
He added that his community has a very large Chinese population and it was important to him that people learn about other cultures and also for his own Chinese constituents to have the opportunity to see something of their own traditional culture.
“It’s incredibly important.”
Divine Performing Arts has three dance companies on its 2009 world tour that will stop in over 65 cities in Asia, Oceania, Europe and North America.
