LONDON—Olga, a fashion designer, was in awe of the exquisitely costumed artists of Shen Yun Divine Performing Arts (DPA) 2009 World Tour debut, held at the renowned New London Theatre on March 3.
“Oh, it’s great. I feel so much happiness, and the movements are so elegant. I like the women’s dance and men’s dance too, because it’s so harmonious,” she said.
However, it was the clothing and costumes that “excited” the fashion designer. “The costumes are great. I liked the colour combination and fabrics ... amazing.”
Apparel has been a defining part of the Chinese cultural heritage for centuries.
Also attending the performance, vice-president of an association Ms. Spensley, was taken by the presentation of the highly-acclaimed performers saying, “It was absolutely beautiful. I just loved the ladies, the way they hold themselves, and their arms so fluid, it’s almost like watching water flow, just absolutely gorgeous. I love it.”
Born in Singapore, Ms. Spensley always patronised Chinese productions, saying of the New York-based production, “This is beautiful.”
She said she also has a “great affinity with Chinatown. I have many friends there, and so I always come along to these events. They’re gorgeous.”
She admired the segment, Flowing Sleeves, a window reminiscent of the women of the celebrated Tang imperial court. Their elegance and majestic bearing suggest the magnificence of that era—often regarded as the pinnacle of Chinese civilisation.
“I quite like the ones with the turquoise dresses with the big sleeves. I thought the girls were absolutely wonderful in the way that their arms were flowing, and the sleeves are beautiful. And also the skirts. The way they move … yes, I love it very much. Very nice, very nice.”
Ms. Spensley also loved the music, an orchestral blend of Western and Chinese composition.
“Always love the music, yes. It’s very restful, very watery. It’s like flowing water, which is very, very restful. Lovely.”
