FRANKFURT, Germany—Divine Performing Arts (DPA) 2009 World Tour opened to a packed house in Frankfurt’s popular venue Jahrhunderhalle, on Feb. 21.
The global economic crisis was put on hold in the banking metropolis Frankfurt at the river Main, the seat of the European Central Bank and the German stock exchange, but rather a widely discussed cultural event, namely the traditional Chinese performance by the DPA, took precedent.
On its European leg of a world tour, the New York-based company’s objective is to revive China’s 5,000-year-old culture through Chinese classical dance, music, song, and folk legends bringing them into the 21st century with the use of state-of-the-art digital backdrops and lighting.
Audience members, Mr. and Ms. Scharfe from Frankfurt, said: “We are seeing the choreography and the movement techniques from a professional angle, because both of us are professional dancers and worked for many years as dance teachers. We are truly impressed. We can see how they [the artists] trained towards this [type of performance], which is fascinating. These performers are trained to the ultimate, especially the women, who radiate an unearthly charm.” Ms. Scharfe quickly adding, “...also the men!”
“What the performers radiate is something that is missing in our psyche—this special charm. Their movements are quite different [from what we are used to], especially when standing, or the technique they use when walking, not a single hair moves. They move at a speed similar to a 100-meter sprint, and they could still carry a full glass of water on their heads without spilling a drop,” Mr. Scharfe said with admiration.
Before leaving he said, “It was a great honor that we could see this show and we don’t want to forget to mention the costumes—they were fantastic, especially as to how the rich colors dazzled our eyes.”
DPA is the only company in the world that performs exclusively pure Chinese dance on stage. With a new program, different costumes, and totally new choreography, this year DPA will give 43 performances in 16 cities and 12 countries in Europe.
