FT. LAUDERDALE, Florida—Divine Performing Arts (DPA) arrived in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Dec. 18, via New York, in preparation for Friday’s evening performance and Saturday’s matinee and evening performances.
This year marks the second season that the acclaimed Broward Center for the Performing Arts will host the New York-based performers, in celebration of traditional Chinese culture.
At a time when some festive cheer is seriously needed, DPA will open its season here with its unique performances, including a full orchestra with both Eastern and Western instruments.
World-class vocalists and authentically attired dancers representing different dynasties and ethnicities will perform against innovative backdrops.
Divine Performing Arts Company has an ambitious and rigorous schedule this year, with three groups touring concurrently and performing throughout the holiday season. Coinciding with the Fort Lauderdale shows, performances will also take place in Philadelphia (Dec. 19–21) and Atlanta (Dec.19–20). The Fort Lauderdale performers will continue on to Sarasota (Dec. 22–23) and Jacksonville (Dec. 26).
One of the hosts of the show, Ms. Zhou Mei, said that DPA seeks to convey the divine culture behind “every painstakingly researched gown, every breathtaking leap … every slight gesture with inner meaning” in honor of the glory that was ancient China, heralded from ancient times as a divinely inspired culture.
In relatively recent history, the communist rule in China has attempted to systematically wipe out that tradition; however the DPA’s influence is contributing to a renaissance of that priceless culture and its traditional values.
After a record number of performances by each of the three touring groups, DPA will convene in New York City for performances of the Chinese New Year Splendor at Radio City Music Hall on Jan. 24 and 25. As in previous years, the gala event in the Big Apple will feature new and innovative artistic delights to captivate audiences of all ages and cultures.
