PASADENA, Calif.—“I love it! I absolutely love it. We were talking about how serene and peaceful the dancing and performance is,” said Mr. Miller, an oil company project manager.
He and a friend, Ms. Luna, were attending the Divine Performing Arts Chinese New Year Spectacular held recently at Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles.
“They have a flow to them that leaves you feeling warm and soft and just at peace,” Ms. Luna said, making special mention of a popular story about a drunkard, “The Poets Vision.”
“Yes, that’s how the poem came about, I think, because of the drink, and he saw those [dancers] and was able to write the poem. That was very good.”
All the stories were grasped visually, able too be understood without explanation.
“I think looking at different parts in China that I’m not familiar with,” Ms. Luna said, “And then seeing the program, you see different styles coming from different places. I like the Himalayan one. I thought that one was very pretty. I love the music, the flutes are very warm, you feel like just going into it.”
Mr. Miller agreed that the show gave a good understanding of where China is from, and how its traditional culture fits into the scheme of things.
“Yes, I love the stories, very typical. I think they transcend the cultures, you know they are as applicable to American life as they are to Chinese life, and I found a lot of humor in them too. Very good.”
