NEW YORK—Mr. and Mrs. Qardner, both psychologists, were among the audience at the evening showing of Divine Performing Arts’ show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
“I like it,” Mr. Qardner said. “We’ve been to China and it’s a little different from what we’ve seen there.”
Mrs. Qardner said she enjoyed the show, especially the “number about spring. I loved it visually. It was beautiful.” She refers to a dance piece in which the dancers use fans to portray the blooming of flowers.
The couple had been in China and has seen Chinese dance before. DPA revives classical Chinese dance with an air of authenticity that audience members from China and Taiwan say they have not seen in their homelands.
Eric Yu, a Chinese antique dealer, came with a friend upon hearing that the show is very good. “This is the first time I have seen this show,” Yu said. “I have never seen something like this before.”
Some ethnic dances made him feel at home.
“I feel I have a strong yuanfen[predestined relationship] with it. I like every number in the program,” he said. “Where I grew up, many years ago, people were truly like that.”
