Eddie the Butler family dog had his leash on when his family last saw him at the Light The Night walk for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society near the Philadelphia Art Museum one evening in late October.
What they hadn’t anticipated, though, was that when the fireworks started, 11-year-old Eddie would become so terrified that he would escape his collar, run away, and go missing for over a month.
Julie Butler, her husband Rick, and their kids attended the fundraiser on Oct. 27 in support of a friend who had leukemia. When they found that Eddie was gone that night, they searched the area in vain, unable to find him. To everyone’s horror, Eddie was gone.
The Bulters had adopted Eddie as a rescue dog when he was just one year old, and he had become part of the family. Naturally, they were worried sick. Soon, they printed up and posted around 1,000 flyers in areas where they suspected Eddie might turn up.
Weeks went by.
Then on Tuesday, local Jason Fisher heard scratching on the backdoor of his home in Bala Cynwyd, and he found Eddie. He let him in and fed him before taking a photo of him and posting it on the local community blog page group.
The post was shared thousands of times, and soon Andrea Nahmias Sergio, a community group member, noticed and started keeping an eye out for the missing dog. When she saw one of the flyers, she recognized Eddie’s picture and called the family’s number.
The best part of the story was when she met the Butlers at the pound to finally be reunited with Eddie, where Sergio caught the beautiful moment on video, later to be shared on social media for the world to enjoy.
So, for all the talk about how social media is wasting our time and getting us addicted, it turns out there is a good side to it as well—it brings old friends together and reunites lost family members, including man’s best friend.
