Sugar scrubs are great for the skin. Packed with cleansing, moisturizing, and exfoliating properties, they’re simple to make and don’t use too many ingredients. Soap artist Katie from Royalty Soaps shared her recipe for DIY peppermint sugar scrubs. Follow along to make your own—perfect for yourself or as a gift to friends and family!
Refer to Katie’s video to gather all the required supplies. Then, gather the following ingredients:
  • 10 ounces of white granulated sugar
  • 4 ounces of clear melt and pour soap
  • 2 ounces of shea butter
  • 2 ounces of olive oil
  • 2 mililitres of peppermint fragrance oil (skin safe)
  • 5 drops of tomato red colorant from TKB
  • 1/2 teaspoon velvet pearl mica from Nurture Soap

Instructions

Step 1

Katie advises putting half of all your main ingredients in separate containers. This is because you’ll be making two separate batches of sugar scrubs, one red and the other white. Put five ounces of sugar in one container, two ounces of melt and pour soap in a second container, and one ounce of shea butter with one ounce of olive oil in your final container.

Step 2

Melt the shea butter and olive oil mixture in the microwave for roughly 30 seconds. If it’s still not melted, Katie advises stirring it and returning it to the microwave for another 15 seconds. Do the exact same thing for the melt and pour. However, this one may take less time to melt, around 20 seconds.

Step 3

Once everything is melted and mixed, it’s time to add the fragrance and color. If your coloring is dispersed in glycerin, pour it directly in the melt and pour. However, if it’s in powder form or mica, Katie suggests putting it in the oils instead as it will disperse better that way. Put five drops of the color in the melt and pour and stir it to dissolve.

Step 4

Add half of the total fragrance amount (around 1 millilitre) to the oils. Pour the red melt and pour into the oils and stir well.

Step 5

Add your five ounces of granulated sugar. If some sugar is stuck to the sides of the container, scrape it out with your spatula. Then mix everything up! If the mixture appears a bit solid, Katie says not to worry as the sugar is most likely hardening things up. Put it in the microwave for 10 seconds to give it a semi liquid form. You don’t want it too soupy, Katie explains, but you still want it to be pourable. If you find it’s still too solid, try putting it back in the microwave for another 10 seconds.

Step 6

Pour the mixture into your molds. Repeat these steps to make the white sugar cube scrub in exactly the same manner apart from adding a white color dye. When you have both colors in your mold, put the whole mold in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes until it’s hardened. Then take them out of the molds, setting them on some paper towels to absorb any excess oils. Finally, cut them up! Katie cuts hers up into nine cube pieces.

How to Use the Sugar Scrubs

To use the sugar scrubs, Katie instructs to take a piece in your palm, pouring some water over it to soften the sugar scrub. Then, use your hands to press it into a paste. Apply it to your body, focusing on the dry areas, but making sure to avoid the face, eyes, and any sensitive parts. After using the sugar scrubs, your skin should feel supple and moisturized.
