This weekend brings to Denver the much-anticipated arrival of Shen Yun Performing Arts, performing at the Temple Buell Theatre April 17-18.
“We are very, very excited to welcome Shen Yun back to Denver,” said Vivian Lam, spokesperson for Colorado’s Chinese Divine Culture Association (CDCA), a co-host of Shen Yun Performing Arts’ Denver shows. “This show is exquisite in its beauty and depth; there is nothing else like it.”
The performers are returning to Denver for the third time, performing three shows over two days as part of their 20 country, 100+ city tour.
Shen Yun is unique in its approach of Chinese art and traditional culture, seeking to “revive the true, five-millennia-old artistic tradition of China,” without the influence of China’s present communist regime, often found in modern Chinese artistry.
Shen Yun’s 2010 repertoire features all-new performances of dance, music, and song, focusing on China’s authentic cultural heritage.
Government representatives expressed their greetings in anticipation of Shen Yun’s return to the Mile-High City.
“On behalf of the State of Colorado, it is my pleasure to welcome you,” Colorado Governor Bill Ritter Jr. stated. “Such an event creates the perfect platform for a cross-cultural experience between East and West, and will serve to unify those who have an interest in the Chinese culture.”
Denver Mayor John W. Hickenlooper expressed appreciation for the beauty of Shen Yun and the mission of CDCA. Mayor Hickenlooper, in a proclamation, expressed his “sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Chinese Divine Culture Association for bringing this beautiful, rich and uplifting Shen Yun Performing Arts show to Denver.”
Susan Osborne, mayor of nearby Boulder, also issued a proclamation from her office, offering “congratulations and appreciation” for Shen Yun, and recognizing the performance “seeks to not only entertain, but also more broadly educate, enrich and inspire” through “the pure excellence and grandeur of classical Chinese dance and music.”
Other mayors from cities within the Denver-metro area echoed recognition in their own statements, with proclamations received by Mayor David Casiano of Parker, Mayor Bob Murphy of Lakewood, Mayor Erik Hansen of Thornton, and Mayor Nacy McNally of Westminster.
Other local recognition came when Critic-at-Large Greg Moody, in a recent segment on entertainment picks for Denver’s CBS4 television station, said “Get your tickets now!” when mentioning Shen Yun’s upcoming performances, featuring “magnificent Chinese music and dance.”
Shen Yun Performing Arts will perform a matinée on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., and evening show at 8:00 p.m., MST. On Sunday there will also be a 2:00 p.m. matinée show. Families are welcome, including children ages 3 and up. Tickets are still available for the Denver shows as of this writing, with prices ranging from $35–$100.
