Stephen Jones: Death of the Neighborhood

Stephen Jones once topped the charts with his previous incarnation Babybird, but it’s safe to say that his new project will not get anywhere near the top ten. On this two disc debut, Jones has well and truly cast off his pop past. This is leftfield electronica and hip hop, scratchy, lo-fi and inventive. Disc two is entirely instrumental and at times sounds like a soundtrack to a low budget US indie flick, combining both beats and soaring strings. Disc one sees Jones vocally more to the fore, creating interesting and at times infectious beats and repetitious chanted lyrics. A beguiling oddity of an album.
