A window screen is a good deterrent to keep bugs outside your home. If there’s a hole in the screen, you can use a screen repair kit or replace the screening material or have a handyman do the job. But what if the frame is damaged?

The M-D 5/16-inch-by-5-foot bronze aluminum replacement window screen kit can be cut to size to fit the window. You can buy the kit for $25 and build it yourself and save 71 percent. Find a sturdy flat work surface for the assembly, and you’ll need a measuring tape, hacksaw, utility knife and scissors.

A handyman will make a new window screen with the kit and install it for $85, which includes labor and material. The kit is made up of lengths of aluminum (for the frame), fiberglass screen mesh, spline and hardware designed to create square corners. It also includes screws, pull tabs and side tension springs for the frame and a rolling tool to install the mesh.

To build a screen, find a sturdy flat work surface for the assembly. Before you begin, take the time to thoroughly clean the window frame and remove any dirt and debris. If the window needs painting, it’s best to do it before you install the new screen.
