James Patterson Sends Books to Troops
Publisher Little, Brown, and Company, and best-selling author James Patterson are teaming up in a show of support for the U.S. military by donating 200,000 copies of Patterson’s works to be included as part of care packages for serving soldiers, according to Publishers Weekly. The nonprofit organization Operation Gratitude will distribute the books to members of the armed forces serving in the United States and Afghanistan, according to the report.
Justice Department Takes Aim at Apple, Publishers
The United States Justice Department has issued a warning to Apple, Simon & Schuster Inc., Hachette Book Group, Penguin Group, Macmillan, and HarperCollins Publishers Inc., saying it plans to accuse them in a lawsuit of “colluding to raise the prices of electronic books,” according to Reuters. CEO Arnaud Nourry responded by saying, “We have obviously decided to cooperate with the authorities ... and we believe that we have committed no objectionable acts,” according to the news service.
Study Looks at Reading Trends Among Students
Renaissance Learning, Inc. has released its study of school students, grades 1-12 and their reading habits. What Kids Are Reading 2012: The Book-Reading Habits of Students in American Schools reveals that children in first and second grade read most frequently Dr. Seuss’s classic Green Eggs and Ham. Third through sixth graders turned to Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney most often. Among seventh and eighth graders, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton proved stiff competition to “Diary.” High school students preferred The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins overall this year, according to the study of 7.6 million students.
