Malcolm Gladwell at Work on New Book
Best-selling author and journalist Malcolm Gladwell will take on the idea of the underdog in his next book, “David and Goliath,” according to publisher Little, Brown and Company. The New Yorker staff writer who penned to great acclaim, “Outliers: The Story of Success,” among other books, will this time explore “what happens when underdogs confront the powerful.” The book’s audio version will be released in sync with its hardcover counterpart in 2013.
Beatrix Potter Illustrations Presented at Auction
An impressive collection of books and literary illustrations was brought to auction through Sotheby’s London on Tuesday, including the very recognizable characters of children’s author Beatrix Potter. One notable collection of four watercolors depicting the nursery rhyme, “This Pig Went to Market,” sold for 61.25 pounds (approx. $95). Other famous authors featured included Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll, Charles Dickens, and many more.
Book Festival to Debate Big Ideas in Edinburgh
The capital city of Scotland will host its annual series of festivals, including the Edinburgh International Book Festival next month. Running from August 11-27, the festival boasts over 800 authors and over 750 events. With event topics like, “Love and War in America,” “The Resistance Women Who Survived Auschwitz,” “A Crash Course in Western Philosophy,” and the Amnesty International Imprisoned Writers Series, the discussions promise to be wide-ranging and truly international.
