MISSISSAUGA, Ontario—Shen Yun Performing Arts performed to another sold-out crowd this Saturday afternoon at the Living Arts Centre. Among those in attendance, Ron Singer, artistic director of a performing arts academy, said he was extremely impressed by the show.
“They are excellent performers, great ensemble, they work together beautifully,” said Mr. Singer, whose credentials include artistic director, television producer, and director of the graduate program in theatre at York University in Toronto where he has had tenure for the past 32 years.
What struck Mr. Singer again and again was the fusion of East and West throughout the performances in various aspects of the show.
“I am extremely impressed, yes I did notice and I think the melding of the two is quite exceptional. Again, how they manage to do this, to be able to appeal to a western audience but at the same time still stay true to the classical tradition is an extraordinary feat,” commented the art veteran who has directed more than 30 professional theatre productions in his career.
“Combining the western with the Chinese, with the classical, is done in a brilliant manner so that it works beautifully, it flows very smoothly,” said Mr. Singer. He added that he believes both western and Chinese audiences can identify with the show. “It’s a perfect melding of the two.”
Shen Yun is well known for its live orchestra which successfully combines traditional western and Chinese instruments to accompany each dance piece.
“I think the orchestra is quite extraordinary. I am extremely impressed with the quality of the sound the orchestra is producing,” Mr. Singer said.
“Overall, I would say this is an extremely entertaining [show] and the word that occurs to me first and foremost is colourful—one of the most colourful presentations that I’ve seen in a long time.”
Every year Shen Yun has a new set of programs that consist primarily of large-scale ethnic and classical Chinese dance and musical soloists.
“There must be an immense amount of work that goes into producing this quality of show. It’s got to be. Each dance an amazing amount of work, and I would imagine also the costuming and the lighting…” said Mr. Singer.
