NEW YORK—Christie’s joins Old Masters Week with its two-part auction of Old Masters and 19th century paintings, drawings, and watercolors on Wednesday, Jan. 26.
Presenting European art from the 15th to the 19th century, Christie’s 320 lots feature some extraordinary works of art, including some recent discoveries. Total sales are expected to bring in over $48 million.
Public viewings open at Christie’s Rockefeller Galleries at 20 Rockefeller Plaza, Jan. 23 to 28, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Christie’s chooses once again to combine the sales of Old Masters and masters from the 19th century, including exceptional Orientalist artists such as Sir Lawrence Lama-Tadema, who’s painting “The Finding of Moses,” 1904, sold late last year for $35.9 million, annihilating its $3 million to $5 million estimate. Not surprisingly, there is quite an air of anticipation to see just how much that sale has boosted interest in the artist and other Orientalists.
“Leading the sale is Luca Carlevarijs’s magnificent ‘View of the Molo, Venice, Looking West,’ an exemplary work by this unrivalled master of Venetian vedutismo, or view paintings,” according to Christie’s.
Then there’s Giovanni Panini’s capriccio of Rome, Jean-Leon Gérôme’s exotic Oriential work, and William Adolphe Bouguereau’s depiction of Eva and Frances Johnston, the daughters of the first president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Other works worth noting are by Raphael, Pompeo Batoni, and Giovanni Battista Lusieri.
