Kai Fagerstrom brings abandoned houses to life with photos of the creatures that enter the once-human spaces. The man-made structures slowly decay and return to the natural world.

The location is a cottage in Salo, Finland. A family of 13 people lived there 40 years ago and it’s exactly the kind of place Fagerstrom has been fascinated with for more than a decade.

“Deserted buildings are so full of contradictions,” he said, according to the National History Museum website. “I am fascinated by the way nature reclaims spaces that were, essentially, only ever on loan to humans.”

Fagerstrom has published photos in National Geographic, and he won the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in 2010 and 2012 among other awards.

These photos are part of his “The House in the Woods” collection. Visit his website to see more photos.
