Bodie is called a ghost town and it can be found in the Bodie Hills east of the Sierra Nevada, California. Founded in 1876, Bodie California was once a bustling mining town inside a desert. It is located 12 mi east-southeast of Bridgeport at an elevation of 8379 feet (2554 m).
Bodie began as a mining camp but everything changed after finding profitable gold ore in 1859. The discovery of the treasure stone quickly transformed the town into bustling wild west boom town.
The boom however did not last long and by the 1880 the gold began to dry up. The decline continued and by the 1917 the local railroad was abandoned.
Now Bodie has just few residence, full time caretakers who preserves the town and making it accessible to visitors which according report reach 200 thousand per year.
The U.S. Department of the Interior recognized Bodie town as a National Historic Landmark. And it is also registered as a California Historical Landmark.
