NEW YORK—For you coffee aficionados in Manhattan, a decent latte prepared by a competent barista is hard to come by in the 10 blocks south of Penn Station on the West Side. Fortunately a little oasis has emerged on 28th Street.

ALT (abbreviated from A Little Taste) is owned by Analisse Taft, who has partnered with Greg Heinz from Long Island Roasters. The results are in and the espresso is solid, with a bold blend of beans from Heinz’s local roaster, and a balanced experience that won’t leave you asking ‘why did I just pay for $4 for that?’

It’s quite the contrary.

Tempting pastry’s from Lafayette Bakery are also served. For the ‘decent coffee’ starved, make this your local spot.
