Rameau’s contribution to harpsichord music is undeniable and here his revolutionarily complex harmony is showcased to the full. Famous for not being famous, this release is nicely timed to follow up the focus on Rameau at the Proms this year to mark the 250th anniversary of his death.
This recording, comprising the whole of Rameau’s keyboard suites, produces an intricate, capricious and extremely polished performance from Esfahani. Light and nimble his effortless ingenuity at the instrument suits Rameau’s work perfectly.
A small caveat is the over 2 hours length of the album, which makes it a must buy for lovers of harpsichord music and a maybe for others.
