Jessica Pratt’s sound is difficult to define, ethereal and dreamy as if she inhabits a folk world from a parallel universe. Subtle nuances in the performance enhance the otherworldly atmosphere, though such off kilter effects as the slowed down ‘wrong speed’ tempo change on ‘Jacquelyn in the Background’ could be wearing after the first listen. There’s a real childlike innocence about her delicate vocal delivery – high pitched, almost nasal – that has potential to enchant and irritate in equal measure. This is her first record where the songs were intended to form an album. When at its best it is a hypnotic and hushed acoustic guitar driven success.
