SYDNEY—Kris Czerniawski, a professional actor, dancer and film director, loves Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company’s pageantry of China’s true cultural heritage, with a passion.

For the third year running, Mr. Czerniawski was amidst an enthusiastic audience applauding the New York-based company’s show at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre. He attended the final show, a Feb. 23 performance, which brought three curtain calls at its conclusion.

Shen Yun brings to life 5,000 years of Chinese history, from its ancient past through to the present. The interpretations of stories adapted from Chinese legends, folk traditions, and contemporary issues, are portrayed through classical Chinese dance, song, and music.

“It is fabulous! This is the third time, three years in a row, that I have been coming to see the magnificent, fabulous performance,” Mr. Czerniawski said.

A dancer of Latin-American themes himself, Mr. Czerniawski says classical Chinese dance is completely different.

“It is art, it is dance and the presentation, the choreography, the background, the way those technical things come in, they are important as well,” he said.

“And another thing is, Chinese culture became my family heritage as well,” he proudly announced.

“My granddaughters are Chinese, they live in Hong Kong and were born in Hong Kong, so I go there quite often and I have the chance to see China almost first hand.”

From Mr. Czerniawski’s artistic point of view, “Shen Yun is not well known in the Western world, so is different and really good and it’s got a message as well, their message is relayed in a very nice way.”

He was saddened by the communist regime’s interference in past years, trying to stop the company from performing in a number of countries. Some of the dances depict life under China’s authoritarian regime, where freedom of expression and belief is violently suppressed.

“I don’t understand why. You know, this is art so what’s the politics got to do with it?

“This show is really magnificent ... if you haven’t seen it, next year, come and see it. It is magic. I love it!”
