PHILADELPHIA—New Jersey state senator Fred Madden came back to the city of his youth, Tuesday, to see Shen Yun Performing Arts, at The Academy of Music.

“The dancing was exquisite, the singing was awesome, and the message transcends a lot of cultural lines, the centuries of tradition came forth,” said the state senator.

Shen Yun’s performance of classical Chinese dance stopped in Philadelphia Feb. 22 and 23 to bring the legends and flavor of ancient China . Through folk and classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun brings the many regions and stories of China to life.

Sen. Madden called Shen Yun “a great show” and said the program “gave a fantastic message” to the audience. He said the energy of the performers carried the show and he could see that the dancers enjoyed their job, “they are very fortunate that way.”

He said he appreciated the short story-based dances that “get the message across.”

One dance, No Regrets, aroused his sense of justice, he said. “And from my sense I find that just unconscionable, here we are in the 21st century and there are countries that still treat individuals like that just because of something they were reading.” Madden said he was in disbelief that people are still being persecuted today for what they chose to read.

The program reminds us to not to take our American freedom for granted and to be aware of the injustices going on in the world, according to Sen. Madden. He said we must fight as a nation to help stop injustice in the world and call on our leaders to voice opposition against injustices.

Sen. Madden encouraged others to take time to see Shen Yun. He said people who see the show “will be absolutely thrilled, this is a fantastic show.”

Sen. Madden said he would talk it up when he gets home and “hopefully some people [from New Jersey] will be able to come over and enrich their lives with understanding more about the Chinese culture.”

He jokingly said he would not only tell people from New Jersey to come, but “Delaware people, people from New York can come to Philadelphia, I think we have better cheese steaks and food than New York City does.”
