There is something pretty special about a beach holiday. It has been somehow culturally or subliminally ingrained in us that vacations are about relaxing, feeling the sand beneath your toes, the waves rolling gently in, and the sun warming your skin as you sip and endless supply of cocktails. It is hard to argue with – beach holidays are pretty spectacular. In this article we share with you five of our favourite beach holiday destinations.
Mykonos, Greece
The Greek islands are a bit of a mixed bag, some are super quiet and romantic, some are over-developed and touristy. The island of Mykonos however somehow strikes just the right balance. The beaches here are amazing – Elia is the pick of the them – the water clear, blue, and warm, and the old town is a lot of fun jut to wander through, deciding where to eat or where to get a drink.
Sitges, Spain
An easy train ride from beach-side party city Barcelona, Sitges is popular with families as well as younger people out for a good time. It really has something to offer everyone. There is a really good stretch of sand at Sitges and there is a lot of parading up and down – some of the best people watching you will find anywhere.
Ibiza, Spain
Ibiza may technically be part of Spain but this little Balearic island really is in a little world of its own. International party lovers fly in from around the world to experience some of the biggest and best dance clubs of the world. But if that’s not your thing then the beaches are still spectacular enough to make this a top beach destination in its own right. Playa Es Cavallet is my favourite beach – the beach bar there serves great grilled squid and the music gets progressively louder as the day progresses.
Palm Cove, Australia
Just near Port Douglas up in the tropical far north of the state of Queensland in Australia, Palm Cove is an idyllic tropical beach paradise. A small beach road, lined with cafes and restaurants, hundreds of palm trees, and the blue water that stretches out to the Great Barrier Reef. The downside is that you have to watch out for crocodiles and stinging jellyfish, but still a beautiful destination.
Boracay, Philippines
Not the easiest place to get to but definitely worth the effort, Boracay island is about an hour’s flight from the capital Manila (and then a short ferry ride). This is a long, beautiful beach lined with bars and restaurants. The water here is so warm it’s hard to believe that you’re in the ocean. Take a catamaran around the island to find some of the best snorkelling spots.
So many beaches, so little time. This is just a taste of some of the great beach holidays that we’ve experienced recently, but as long as you have some sand, some sun, and a cocktail then you can have a great beach holiday wherever you are in the world.
