What’s the key to looking and feeling fabulous? Picking out the right kind of clothing for your body shape. This can be daunting with the growing number of colors, styles, and fabrics to choose from, but fashion influencer and elegance coach Anna Bey breaks it down to just five simple tips to help you transform your wardrobe.

1. Dress for Your Body Shape

The first step, according to Bey, is to make sure the shape of a garment goes well with your individual body shape. Because we have different body shapes, clothing is never one size fits all.
“Dressing for your body shape is a jungle and it’s not a very straightforward practice,” Bey admitted. But with practice, you will soon learn to perfect this important technique.
The key is to choose something that will work in favor of your body. “You have to start thinking about the shape of the garment and whether it goes accordingly to your own body shape,” said Bey. She advises that you shouldn’t simply choose garments that you can squeeze into, but instead focus on whether it enhances the beautiful aspects of your body.

2. Balance Proportions Based on Your Height

People of average height can often wear most things and look fine. However, if you’re on the other two extremes—tall or petite—Bey recommends using accessories to balance out your proportions. Tall women can wear larger prints and petite women should opt for smaller ones to even out their figures.

3. Wear Fabrics That Suit Your Body Shape

People often make the mistake of choosing the wrong fabrics. Hourglass figures should always consider flexible and stretchy fabrics to accentuate their natural curves, Bey advises. On the other hand, people with a rectangle shape could benefit from wearing stiffer materials, as they will help give the appearance of a more pronounced figure. Cinching your body with the use of a belt is also a great idea to create the illusion of curves and a small waist.

4. Pick the Right Colors

Bey considers color to be the most important factor when choosing clothing: The right choice can make or break an entire look. For instance, black is a common color choice for a lot of people, but it may not be the best choice for you. This is especially true if you tend to be more fair-skinned, as it can make you look washed out, Bey pointed out. For people with fairer complexions, wearing lighter colors is a better choice. Even if you’re of a warmer complexion, black can sometimes come across as too domineering and distracting: “You end up seeing the color, rather than the person,” Bey explained.

5. Figure Out Your Skin Undertone to Determine the Best Shades

One way to determine the best colors for your wardrobe is to first determine your skin undertone, which can be either cool, warm, or neutral. Finding this vital piece of information will also help you pick out the right makeup shades! To figure out the right shades, you must first determine whether you have a cool or warm undertone, says Bey. All colors have warm and cool shade variations that you can match to your skin.
