Travelling is something that is high on many of our bucket lists, as it’s a big wide world out there with so much to see. If you’re taking the plunge and going travelling, first of all…congratulations! And second of all, here are some tips for doing so for the first time.
1. Make a List of Where You Want to Go
Most people have a rough idea of where they want to go, and it is a good idea to have a bit of a plan so that you can aim to see and do as much as possible in time you have dedicated to travelling.
2. Speak to People Who Have Been to Those Places Before
Once you know where you want to go – or at least where you’re starting out – it’s great if you can speak to people who have already been to that place so that you can have a bit of an idea what to expect, and also so they can give you some tips.
3. Get Organised When it Comes to Packing
Packing isn’t easy when you’re going away for a long time, as it’s hard to fit a year’s worth of stuff into one suitcase, for example! Get organised early on when thinking about what to take. Look online for packing tips for the places you’re going to, or just for long trips away so you can start to think about what to take and what to leave at home.
4. Go With an Open Mind
It’s not always easy to go somewhere new, especially if the culture is completely different to what you’re used to. It’s so important to go to a new place with an open mind so that you can have the best experience possible.
5. Take Some Phrase Books with You
If you’re going to places that don’t speak your language, take some phrase books or download some translation apps onto your phone to make life a little easier whilst you’re over there. Basic communication is great for emergencies, but it’s also good for just chatting to the locals!
6. Do the Touristy Things, But Don’t Be Afraid to Go Off the Beaten Track
There are no doubt lots of things you want to see in certain places, but don’t neglect the things that aren’t in the guide book. Ask the locals for great alternative things to do in your new location so that you can see the place from different eyes.
7. Keep a Journal or Blog
This is an ideal way to remember all of those incredible experiences, and also those times that weren’t so easy and what you’ve learnt from them. They’re also great to have and show people back home, too.
8. Look at the Best Ways for Staying in Touch with Home
Missing home is perfectly natural, so look into the easiest ways to stay in touch before you go to make it simpler whilst you’re out there. This can be things like bolt-ons for your phone, international SIM cards and things like Skype accounts.
9. Don’t Worry if You’re Finding it Hard
Travelling isn’t always one long holiday, especially if you’re going for the first time and even more so if you’re going it alone. It’s perfectly natural to find some times and situations harder than others, so don’t beat yourself up for struggling.
10. Embrace It!
Have the best time possible and just enjoy it while you can as it’s an experience you'll treasure forever!
