A gigantic glowing mushroom cloud dominated the Beijing skyline last Thursday, disconcerting many residents, who were concerned it was a sign of imminent doom.
The enormous formation stretched for several miles and was evident for about an hour around 7 p.m. on June 14. Unlike rain clouds, the cloud was white, yet lightning strikes were seen within it.
Some people believe that the cloud may be a sign that an earthquake is about to happen.
A user on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like website, posted pictures of the mushroom cloud alongside a similar-looking cloud photographed in Sichuan two weeks prior to the major earthquake there in 2008.
Another user noted recent sharp changes in the disturbance storm time index, which is a measure of activity in the Earth’s magnetic field.
On June 18, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake was recorded between Tangshan and Tianjin, one of Beijing’s neighboring cities.
Coincidentally, people also saw strange clouds and lightning on June 12 and 17 in Taiwan, which has had multiple floods and earthquakes up to a magnitude of 6.5 this month.
