NEW YORK—Legendary American folk singer Arlo Guthrie is performing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City today.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is in 84th year and is seen by over 3.5 million people in New York City and more than 50 million more by television, according to the parade’s official website.
Arlo Guthrie revealed his planned appearance in the parade earlier this month to fans on his website.
“Well, now that the info has been officially released I can tell you the first of a few great things!” said Guthrie in the message. “I will be in the parade in New York on Thanksgiving Day! I haven’t been in a parade for many years. The last time was in Pittsfield. This oughtta be fun! See you there or on TV.”
Arlo Guthrie, is the son of American folk singer Woodie Guthrie, is well known for decades of songs, including “Alice’s Restaurant” and “The Motorcycle Song.”
In another post on his website about Thanksgiving, Guthrie said that he and the holiday are “stuck together.”
“There is nothing that shakes the world more than someone who understands how powerful it is to be thankful for being yourself,” wrote Guthrie. “First of all, it means that no one else has to be you—that’s almost good enough! As I accept myself, with all my faults and craziness, I naturally have to accept other people too for who they are. And there are some really crazy people out there! I love ‘em. And I love that they are willing to be themselves. It keeps the rest of us more or less… well, us!”
He added, “I do wish everyone reading this a thankful heart and a spirit of gratitude.”
Other performers in the parade include Gladys Knight, Kanye West, Jessica Simpson, and many others.
