Patti LaBelle and Aretha Franklin were never in fist fight and neither got arrested, but a false report has gone viral, saying otherwise, and Franklin recently said the whole thing isn’t real.
The fake report was posted on The News Nerd. It states that “legendary singer Patti Labelle arrested and charged with assault and battery after attacking Aretha Franklin.” At the bottom of the page, the website has a disclaimer saying: “The stories posted on TheNewsNerd are for entertainment purposes only. The stories may mimic articles found in the headlines, but rest assured they are purely satirical.”
It adds: “The singers were in Atlanta for an R&B/Soul concert on March 20th when they ran into each other backstage. Labelle was still fuming from a recent run-in with Franklin at the White House for the “Women of Soul” concert. While Aretha Franklin was making her way to the stage, Labelle extended her hand to greet the ‘Respect’ singer, when she threw epic shade in an effort to avoid her. The two exchanged obscenities after the event and parted ways.”
Franklin, 72, issued a statement about the bogus fight story involving LaBelle, who is 69.
According to Billboard, she wrote: “I’ve never heard anything crazier—regarding myself and Patti allegedly fighting on March 20, in Atlanta. On March 20, I was in New York City readying for my birthday patty (Sorry. LOL. Laughing at my typo error). I meant PARTY, which we all had one fabulous time. Patti and I are cool and we always have been. I enjoyed her at the White House. Classic Patti.”
A number of people apparently believed the story.
“It is sad that they came to blows…..BUT Ms Franklin has been know to throw shade to any & everyone!!! On the other hand Ms LaBelle is more down to earth & will stop & take timeout for people. Sometimes people allow other people to take them to a level that should not go to! NOBODY is perfect,& has NEVER been tryed & or setoff!!!” one person wrote on the website.
