NEW YORK— Angelica Torn, acclaimed actress and filmmaker and daughter of well-known actor Rip Torn attended the Shen Yun Performing Arts show at New York’s David H. Koch Theater June 25.

“I want to see more,” Ms. Torn said of Shen Yun. “I want to see more and I want to go out and learn as much as I can about Chinese culture now.”

Ms. Torn received a Helen Hayes Award for Best Actress nomination in 2010 for her role in the first national tour of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning August: Osage County, according to her website. The award winning Lucky Days, which opened in theaters in 2010, was her film company Torn Page Productions’ debut offering, a film that she wrote, co-directed, produced and stars in.

“It’s so wonderful to be exposed to this,” said Ms. Torn about learning traditional Chinese culture after seeing Shen Yun. “I don’t know that much about Chinese culture, I haven’t been to China. But I love the uplifting spirit that you can walk away with, and the beauty of life.”

Ms. Torn said what she enjoyed most about Shen Yun were the intangible aspects.

“Just the energy that comes through in the dance pieces, and all the attention to detail in the costumes,” she said. “So much attention, so much energy, so much focus put into the show to make it so beautiful. It really, really stands out.”

“I love the female dancers the most,” Ms. Torn said. “I love colors, and so the use of color in the last dance...was really beautiful.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company will perform at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in New York City, June 23–26. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
