MONTREAL, Canada—Come from Mexico to discover Chinese culture in Montreal: Why not? This is what made this Tuesday evening at Place des Arts a pure delight for the Gutierrez family as they took in Shen Yun Performing Arts second performance in the city. “Truly spectacular,” says Jose Antonio Gutierrez, a dental surgeon who owns a clinic in Mexico.

Mr. Gutierrez and his wife, Anna Leticia Garcia, are visiting their eldest daughter Anna Lorena who is starting her studies in international business in Montreal. Mr. Gutierrez heard about Shen Yun in the media. “I knew it was a good show. [ ...] I heard a lot of good feedback about this group,” he said.

Upon seeing the performance, he felt the values of peace, tranquility and respect reflected all throughout it.

Ms. Garcia was glad to see reflected spirituality in the performance.

“It’s good that people still have beliefs, that they have values,” she said.

New York based Shen Yun presents performances of classical Chinese music and dance with a mission of restoring 5,000 years of divinely-inspired civilization, much of which was lost in China today.

The opening of the second act, Lotuses in Bloom, which depicts the sacredness and purity of the lotus, was particularly moving to Mr. Gutierrez.

The program book description reads, “In this dreamlike piece extolling its virtues, the lotus rise above all flowers to emerge high amidst the clouds. Dancers holding long silken fans glide across the stage like celestial fairies in flight,” reads the program book description.

“Truly spectacular, wonderful,” said Mr. Gutierrez.

For thousands of years, classical Chinese dance has evolved during different dynasties of the Middle Kingdom. It was passed down among the people, through plays, and the imperial courts, growing and evolving through China’s thousands of years-long history.

All three agreed that the choreography was very special.

“I liked the professionalism of the dancers and the whole performance in general,” said Mr. Gutierrez.

“We are truly happy with the show,” added his wife.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has four touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun’s World Company will perform in Montreal until Jan. 9 before going on to Hamilton. For more information, visit Shen Yun Performing Arts.
