CALGARY, Canada—Company owner Thomas Ness returned to the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on April 16 to enjoy Shen Yun Performing Arts for the third time.

Mr. Ness said what kept bringing him back were the vibrant colors and the stories the artists told.

“I learned so much about Chinese culture this way. Just the spectacle of it—as soon as tickets are on sale, I’m buying [it] right in the front row,” he said. Shen Yun “just opens my eyes and mind to the culture of China that I really like.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance and music company. To satisfy popular demand, it has grown from one to eight equally sized companies that perform simultaneously in packed venues around the world.
Its program is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Each year, the performers can be expected to return with a brand-new set of choreography and compositions.

Mr. Ness loved learning about traditional Chinese culture.

“I like how Chinese culture is calm, it’s calming. I want to learn more about the Chinese culture, so I come [here] and then I meet people and we chat ... to open my eyes more,” he said.

“It is advanced because it’s so much older, like the Chinese philosophies and the way of life and family. To see the show—it’s so entertaining with the colors and the music and the storytelling,” he said.

For 5,000 years, China’s civilization flourished under the shared belief that the divine will bless those who uphold traditional moral values. Tragically, within just a few decades of the communist party’s violent takeover, these beliefs were erased and replaced with atheism.

The mission of Shen Yun artists is to return to the world’s stage—the glory and beauty of China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

Mr. Ness is excited that Shen Yun is sharing the spiritual values cherished by the Chinese people before communism, because people were free back then.

“They were free to live and have their family, and they seem more connected with the earth, too,” he said.

“I think we need more of these values. That’s why this show is so good, because it teaches, it opens up the eyes of people. I had no idea [about] Chinese religion pre-communism. I didn’t even know there was one. So, this is very educational,” he said.
