AMNÉVILLE, France—Shen Yun Performing Arts returned to present 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture in six performances at the Galaxie concert hall from April 9 to 13, at the crossroads of Luxembourg, Germany, and Belgium.
“It’s magnificent! I’ve never seen anything like it in my life,” said Dieter Böckem, who came from Luxembourg on Wednesday, April 9, to catch the opening performance.
“The combination of graphics and reality is truly harmonious, it’s impressive,” said Mr. Böckem, Head of Performance Audit at the European Court of Auditors, who saw the performance with Pilar Calvo.
“I really liked the montage with the images. The dancers are really amazingly plastic and flexible. And all those colors ... the mix of colors, it’s a touch of magic actually, it’s very, very beautiful!” said Ms. Calvo, the Director of Language Activities at the European Court of Auditors.
She described the artistic level as “very, very well developed, very well synchronized too, very harmonious in terms of overall aesthetics.”
“Magnificent performances—we couldn’t even do 5 percent of the moves they do!” Ms. Calvo said.
“It’s really a perfection of movements,” Mr. Böckem added.
“The backgrounds, the landscapes chosen for the staging, it’s a bit mystical too, it’s really very, very beautiful and it makes you think of a mixture between the divine and the Earth,” Ms. Calvo said.
“It was a bit magical too. It was cheerful!” she added, describing some comedic moments found in the stories.
“With the spirituality, the graphics behind it and the combination with the dancers, we immediately realized: ‘yes, they’re not just human beings, they’re a bit like gods, they’re dancing gods,” Mr. Böckem said.
“It means that if we know where we come from, what our origins are, we know who we are. It’s important to preserve all that,” she said.
“We’re delighted and think it’s magnificent, they’re great artists, bravo!” she said.

“It really is pure magic,” Annabelle Falentin said after seeing Shen Yun. ”It really is body language, and you’re transported by the emotions and gestures. It’s a moment of pure magic! Quite honestly, I’ve never seen a show as beautiful as tonight’s”
“With 3D too, you’re really transported,” added Mrs. Falentin, a psychologist, who attended the performance with Serge Falentin, a former banker.
“It’s exceptional. They really have incredible gestures,” added Mrs. Falentin. “It’s top level, really. And yes, I think it’s really top level, even world class,”
Shen Yun “takes us to the pinnacle in the end, and it’s very, very well represented,” Mrs. Falentin added.
The psychologist was also sympathetic to Shen Yun’s mission: “I think it’s important that they keep going, that they keep fighting so that the tradition can live on. There are many things that are true and still exist today. There’s persecution indeed, kidnapping ... I think they have to keep fighting for all these values,” she said, referring to the Chinese communist regime’s ongoing religious persecution.

Clementi Filippo, managing director of a catering company, said “I'd love to see it every year,” after his first experience in April, which he attended with his wife, Valentina Kostyuk, head chef at the same restaurant.
“Even from a different angle,“ he added, ”because it’s really beautiful, it’s mesmerizing. And the music, the colors, the clothes, the ballets, the orchestra, it’s fantastic!”
For Mr. Filippo, Shen Yun is “happiness, nothing but happiness.”
“Even if the people don’t speak, it’s explained, the story is told. It’s magic, really! “Ms. Kostyuk said.
Mr. Filippo said they were chatting during intermission about a second viewing already. “We have six children. We thought we should bring all the kids, because it’s something we have to do every year. It feels good.”
Ms. Kostyuk added, “It’s unique.”
Mr. Filippo believes that “in all cultures, tradition is important. Then the cultural side of tradition, the things that are passed down from generation to generation, that are good for everyone, but also the spiritual side, they talk about balance, the malaise of atheism. They’re absolutely right!”
“Just as they say that music is medicine, I find that beliefs are the same thing: they’re a way of feeling good about ourselves,” Ms. Kostyuk said. ”And it also creates spiritual bliss. I think everyone should appreciate the spiritual side, it’s important.”
For Mr. Filippo, Shen Yun brings “happiness! satisfaction, pleasure, joy, but also the possibility of being focused for two hours.
“I don’t even know how long it lasted, because it hypnotized me a little: two hours completely out of this world full of problems and stress. All you can think about is nature, all you can think about is the spiritual, all you can think about is joy, all you can think about is happiness! It feels really good!
“You can feel that the artists love what they do, so the emotion is captured, you can tell,” Ms. Kostyuk said. ”And I feel like I’m on stage with them. As a result, I’ve shared all the emotion they’ve expressed, and I think that’s wonderful.”
