BIRMINGHAM, UK—Shen Yun Performing Arts resonates with the audience to the extent that they think they are “part of the performance as well,” says Amanda Watkin, general secretary of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, a global nonprofit organization focused on charitable works in local communities.

“It was amazing, ... just the vibrancy, the colors, and the ability of all of the performers was just phenomenal,” Ms. Watkin said after seeing Shen Yun at the ICC in Birmingham on Jan. 4.

“It was a really, really, really lovely experience.”

Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by a group of leading classical Chinese artists who wanted to revive traditional Chinese culture. Since then, the classical Chinese dance and music company has grown to feature multiple dance groups that travel the globe each year, bringing exhilarating and rich performances to audiences worldwide.

Ms. Watkin said the performance “stimulated something really positive in me,” and that she “highly recommends it.”

She added that she enjoyed the storytelling in the performance and that everyone, regardless of their background or belief systems, can relate to the performance.

‘Must-See’

Stuart Cheatle, a retired finance director, said Shen Yun was “excellent,” and that he enjoyed the choreography.

“It’s just lovely to see such a wonderful cultural performance,” Mr. Cheatle said.

Mr. Cheatle said that he particularly enjoyed the orchestra, which combines traditional Chinese instruments with classical Western instruments, as well as the performance of the two-stringed Chinese instrument, the erhu.

“The music was very good, obviously, conducted excellently, and it all fit together very well,” he said.

“It’s a must-see show ... it’s just something different.”

‘Very Fulfilling’

Phil Hughes-Narborough, global product manager for Heraeus Electro-Nite, said the performance was “very fulfilling.”

“Very meaningful expressions of the dance, very enjoyable,” he said.

Mr. Hughes-Narborough said he also enjoyed Shen Yun’s patented digital backdrops, which interact with the dances on stage, as well as Shen Yun’s orchestra.

“I think the way that they interacted with the background, [and] were able to sort of come back seamless—was very good. Also, the orchestra is very good. The ability to [match] the timing of the music enhances the experience,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of Shen Yun’s mission, Mr. Hughes-Narborough added that it’s important to learn from the past and from history.

“We’re in danger of washing that away in modern-day society if you’re not careful,” he said.
