PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The beauty of dance and music found in Shen Yun Performing Arts often leaves spectators tapping their feet and inspired to get out and dance as well.

“I was just going to tell my husband I feel like I want to dance right now. I want to just go like this and spin around and jump,” said Amy Wohl, a professionally trained figure skater who works in computer graphics.

She added that throughout the performance, she had the same urge to get up and dance.

“Dancing with music is so very freeing. While I’m watching, I just want to get up, and I want to dance and do a split and spin. And it’s just so inspiring to me.”

To people who may be on the fence about whether to take a leap and purchase tickets, Ms. Wohl said “I think if you want to awaken your soul and let your heart be very light, come see this. It’s very inspiring.”

Shen Yun is based in New York and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture. The artists of the company are passionate about allowing audiences to see the beauty of China before communism, and audience members can often feel this passion radiating from the stage.

“There’s so much feeling that goes into this beautiful performance. I’m looking at the faces of all of the dancers, and they’re making me cry. It’s very touching,” Ms. Wohl said.

After learning that Shen Yun isn’t able to perform in China, her husband, Barry Wohl added, “knowing that this is the history that people can’t live, this makes it more powerful.”

“Very powerful,” Ms. Wohl agreed. “And it’s done so beautifully.  I love the pink plum blossoms. The transformations that everyone is making are just so beautiful.”

The pandemic has prevented many people from leaving their homes to experience a live performance but Ms. Wohl said she and her husband were very happy to have decided to buy tickets to Shen Yun.

“After the pandemic, we still have to wear masks, but we’re so happy to be out and to watch something as beautiful as this,” Ms. Wohl said.

She explained that seeing Shen Yun was something they’ve wanted to do since two years ago.

“We wanted to see this show before the pandemic, and then the pandemic happened, so we didn’t get to see it. So two-and-a-half years ago we wanted to see it in New York.”

Mr. Wohl, who is a restaurant owner, has heard his Chinese guests talk about Shen Yun.

“We’ve always done business with Chinese people too. So they always talk about it also,” he said.
