Online shopping has become a huge consumer trend in today’s information age, and, increasingly, more people are relying on its convenience. But for this unsuspecting Florida couple, they got a lot more than they bargained for.
The couple had ordered 27-gallon (102-liter) plastic storage bins. They knew immediately that something was wrong when the package arrived. First of all, it was much, much heavier than a pair of empty plastic storage bins should be—that was obvious.
“They were extremely heavy, heavier than you would think from ordering four empty bins,” the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous due to safety reasons, told WFTV. And secondly, when the couple opened it, there was something in the bins, and, whatever it was, it smelled ”funny.”
The couple got the shock of their lives when they looked inside the two black bins. Sitting inside the bins was 65 pounds (approx. 29 kg) of marijuana wrapped in green plastic! Immediately, they called the cops and reported the incident. "When the first officer got here, she was in disbelief,” the woman said.
Police seized the drugs and began investigating the incident, trying to get to the bottom of things. The 93.5-pound (approx. 42.41-kilogram) mysterious package was reportedly shipped from a facility in Massachusetts by Amazon’s Warehouse Deals via UPS.
Meanwhile, the couple was just worried about their safety. They were nervous that the unexpected delivery might bring danger to their home. They feared that the pot’s owners might come looking for the 65 pounds of marijuana—worth a street value of about $200,000. “We were still pretty fearful our home would be broken into, and we didn’t sleep there for a few days,” the woman said.
She also mentioned that they had been in contact with Amazon via email for a month, trying to sort out the matter. She demanded a formal apology and explanation from Amazon about the mixup, but the online retailer had been less than uncooperative.
In the end, Amazon simply offered the couple a $150 gift card with the message: “I am unable to do anything else at this time.” The woman wasn’t too satisfied with the response. “There was no concern for a customer’s safety. I mean, this could have turned into a worst-case scenario,” she said.
Regardless, it certainly is an incredible story, and it sure makes one wonder who on earth—possibly a drug lord—put the stash in those bins and why!? Goodness only knows what other things people are sending through Amazon!
