At least five people have been killed and thousands of homes destroyed as fearsome Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas, triggering massive flooding on the island.
As the Category 4 powerful storm continues to batter the coral-based archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, leaving the entire island without power and grounding to a near-standstill, Chella Phillips, a resident in Nassau, Bahamas, has been working hard to protect 97 homeless and abandoned dogs.
Alongside the message, Phillips posted several photos of the rooms of her house packed with the lucky dogs that managed to escape the dangerous Hurricane Dorian as it slammed into the island—all thanks to her compassion.
“It has been insane since lastnight, poop and piss non stop but at least they are respecting my bed and nobody has dared to jump in. We have barricaded the refuge and nobody is outside, the music is playing in all directions of the house and the AC is blowing for them,” she continued. “I managed to bring some less fortunate ones and I really appreciate some of you donating for crates.. I really needed it for the scared ones and the sick ones. so Thank you!”
Phillips, whose non-profit organization has since cared for nearly 1,000 stray dogs on the island in the last four years, went on to say: “We may not get hit as hard as other islands and the saddest part is that after the hurricane leave the Bahamas, some islands will take a long time to recover.”
The animal lover added that she’s extremely heartbroken knowing that an abundance of homeless dogs on each island of the Bahamas had no place to seek refuge from the destructive storm.
“Only God can protect them now,” she said. “Please pray for the Bahamas!”
The post has gone viral, racking up more than 60,000 reactions and 41,000 shares. Many social media users were moved by Phillips’s compassion toward the stray dogs.
“You are the kindest most loving person i know. Thank you for doing all you can for all the animals who can’t help themselves. I am praying for you, all the animals, and your family,” one user wrote.
Another remarked: “Total respect.” Commented another: “Well bless your heart for caring for these poor babies.”
Beyond the shadow of a doubt, Phillips is able to find strength during the hard times as people who read about her efforts have donated crates for those frightened dogs she has rescued. Well, there’s still hope for humanity!
